An observatory at the Siding Spring Observatory site in New South Wales, Australia, funded jointly by the governments of Australia and the UK. The observatory is administered by the Anglo-Australian Telescope Board (AATB), which was set up in the early 1970s when the 3.9-metre (150-inch) Anglo-Australian Telescope was constructed. In 1988, the AATB took over operational responsibility for the 1.2-metre (48-inch) UK Schmidt telescope, which has been at the site since 1973, and it also became a fully shared facility at that time. Widely regarded as one the finest instruments of its type, the Schmidt takes high-quality, wide-angle photographs, 6.4° square, and much of its observing time is dedicated to long-term surveys.
